Alachua County Data Center Cooling System Installation

Problem

A local county municipality facilities department was facing a critical cooling failure at its data center in Gainesville. One of the two computer room AC units had failed, and the second was beginning to show signs of trouble. The data center houses all of the servers for the county’s facilities department, making cooling redundancy vital to prevent downtime and potential damage to critical equipment.

The department needed a partner who could provide both heavy rigging and mechanical expertise to install a new Liebert cooling system and rooftop condenser quickly. Given the urgency, they required a team that could handle crane operations, transportation, and installation in-house to minimize delays and coordinate closely with county staff.

Strategy

Coker assessed the situation and developed a proposal for replacing the failing units. Upon approval, we ordered the necessary equipment and prepared for installation. During this time, the second AC unit failed entirely, increasing the urgency of the project.

When the new Liebert unit and rooftop condenser arrived, our crane and transportation teams mobilized immediately. The building’s location in downtown Gainesville created a unique challenge: crane access was limited to a small parking lot, and we were given a half-day window to complete the lift and clear the area for traffic.

Using our own cranes and transportation equipment allowed us to work fluidly and without reliance on outside vendors. Our qualified riggers navigated the tight site conditions and handled the equipment with care, avoiding any damage to sensitive server hardware or wiring inside the data center. Coordination with the facilities department, the City of Gainesville, and other local authorities ensured that all road closures and access needs were met without disruption.

Outcome

From delivery to installation, the project was completed in three days – ahead of schedule and on budget. The new cooling system restored redundancy to the data center, giving the facilities department peace of mind that its servers would remain protected.

The client was highly satisfied with the quality of work and the speed at which we executed the project. The success of this installation showcases our team’s ability to combine mechanical expertise with in-house crane and transportation services to deliver critical infrastructure projects with precision and efficiency.
